Ok, you might be wondering why I am reviewing a book of photographic Mompts, when this publication is aimed at writers. There are several reasons.
Firstly, some of the assignments could easily lend themselves to writing activity. For example, the self-portrait me starts by requiring you to write a number of words about yourself. Another example is Alphabetography. This requires you to take photos of things that suggest the letters of the alphabet. The "things" in this context could be as simple and ephemeral as the way shadows are falling at a particular time. You could undertake this activity, or you could dispense with the photography aspect altogether and write something every day inspired by a letter of the alphabet- although I think such an activity would be enriched by photographs.
Secondly, the way the prompts are indexed is very useful. For example, the activities listed under "Classroom" can all be undertaken with a group of people, such as in a classroom. I have discovered at least one activity I am tempted to adapt for use in my 60 minute writers’course.
This is also a great book for dipping into at random, for ideas.
On the other hand, if you have a favouritephotographer, you may find them listed at the start of' the book. Turn to their page, and you will find an assignment proposed by them, accompanied by a few words of wisdom.
This is definitely a book worth having, and a good companion to the usual sort of writers' prompts collections.
