This review was first published in Teach Secondary magazine. I’ve included it here because it meets some of the requirements of the English Programme of Study.

The English Programme of Study provides plenty of scope for reading a wide variety of literature. If one area you wish to cover is Gothic stories, this book is simply a must-have. It covers four broad aspects of the gothic: architecture, the land, points of the compass and monsters. Sub-categories include the labyrinth, the village and even the cosmos. Even iconic films are included. The writing is beautiful and the illustrations lavish. And while the discussion is more broad than it is deep, you will find much here to explore further and recommend to your students. A delightfully comprehensive resource.
